Description
Signatory Vintage's Cask Strength Collection presents long aged single casks at natural strength from the firm's Edradour warehousing, a parallel range to the Symington's Choice tier. This Glenrothes 26 Years Old, distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2022 from cask 15125 at 53.6%, runs to 234 bottles released into European markets.
Twenty six years in a refill bourbon cask produces a profile dominated by long incremental wood contribution rather than active first fill extraction. By this point in maturation lignin's breakdown has delivered syringaldehyde and vanillin in steady amounts, hemicellulose chemistry has built furfural precursors, and lactones have produced coconut and creamy oak through cumulative contact. The spirit's natural Speyside ester chemistry leads, with the cask now contributing through accumulated secondary chemistry rather than aggressive early extraction.
On the nose, honeyed barley sits with vanilla, fresh apple and beeswax, the cask's gentle second life contribution clearly framing the spirit. The palate carries cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean oak undertone, the 53.6% strength sitting comfortably without pressing. The finish runs long and softly drying, the cask's diminished tannin signature leaving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit at the front.
