Description
Cadenhead's Small Batch line presents vatted releases drawn from sister casks within the firm's deep stocks, sitting alongside the single cask Authentic Collection. Cadenhead's is Scotland's oldest continuously operating independent bottler, founded in Aberdeen in 1842 and now operated from Campbeltown under J&A Mitchell ownership. This Glenrothes 22 Years Old, distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2019 at 49.7%, was vatted from refill bourbon casks across 966 bottles released into European markets.
Twenty two years in refill bourbon casks produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character. The casks' first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through cumulative contact, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The 49.7% strength reflects long evaporation across the casks.
On the nose, citric lift sits with dried fruit, oily vanilla and malt extract threading through. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean toasted oak undertone, the 49.7% strength delivering distillery character without harshness. A faint coconut lift threads through mid palate. The finish is long and softly drying, the casks' diminished tannin signature giving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit clear room to express.
