Description
Cadenhead's is Scotland's oldest continuously operating independent bottler, founded in Aberdeen in 1842 by William Cadenhead and now operated from Campbeltown under the J&A Mitchell ownership that also runs Springbank Distillery. The Authentic Collection presents bottlings at natural strength without chill filtration or colouring, working through the firm's deep stocks. This Glenrothes 20 Years Old, distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2021 at 49%, was vatted from refill bourbon casks with 162 bottles for European markets.
Twenty years in refill bourbon casks produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through cumulative contact, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The 49% strength reflects measured cask environment across the long maturation, with vatting smoothing individual cask variation.
On the nose, honeyed barley sits with vanilla pod, fresh apple and a faint coconut lift. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a creamy oak undertone, the 49% strength delivering distillery character without harshness. A clean toasted oak note threads through mid palate. The finish is medium long and softly drying, the cask's diminished tannin signature giving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit clear room to express.
