Glenrothes 13 Years Old 2009 Cask #4934613 (Duncan Taylor)

Duncan Taylor's Octave programme transfers maturing spirit into octave casks of roughly fifty litres, one eighth the size of a sherry butt. The reduced volume increases surface area to spirit ratio, sharpening cask interaction in the final months of ageing. This Glenrothes was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2023 at 53.8%, with cask 4934613 yielding 84 bottles for the German market.

The mathematics of the octave favour intensive extraction over the closing window of maturation. With significantly more wood per litre than a hogshead, the cask draws out vanillin, lactones and ellagitannins faster while concentrating residual sugars from the previous tenant. Refill bourbon octaves combine the softer mature signature of an already used cask with the small format's amplification, producing a coconut and vanilla dominant profile rather than the heavier oak grip a first fill octave would deliver.

On the nose, sweet vanilla and toasted coconut sit alongside cooked apple and a faint dill note from active lactones. The palate carries lemon curd, honey and a creamy oak undertone, the 53.8% strength giving the small cask room without scorching. The finish is medium long, oak forward, the octave's tight extractive window leaving the spirit's natural fruit edge intact rather than smothered.
