Description
Adelphi Selection is the flagship independent bottling range of Adelphi, the Scottish company that revived the historic Glasgow distillery name in the late 1990s and went on to build Ardnamurchan distillery in the West Highlands. The Selection presents single casks at natural strength under direct cask number identification. This Glenrothes 13 Years Old, distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2021 from cask 10236 at 59.8%, runs to 604 bottles released into European markets.
Thirteen years in a single Oloroso cask at sustained 59.8% delivers concentrated cask interaction in the cask's productive window. The cask sat in lower humidity warehousing favouring water rather than alcohol evaporation, keeping the spirit at high strength. European oak's tannin contribution accumulates at productive levels, while the cask's residual oxidised sherry combines with lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde extractions. Hemicellulose breakdown produces furfural and the early stages of caramelised sugar chemistry.
On the nose, citric lift sits over a coal gas note that signals heavy oxidative chemistry, with greenhouse fruit and cooked fruit threading through. Dried fruit emerges underneath: fig, raisin, with polished oak grip. The palate moves through chocolate orange, dark chocolate and a developing leathery quality, the 59.8% strength delivering the cask's chemistry without scorching. The finish is long and tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance.
