Alistair Walker Whisky Company's Infrequent Flyers range presents single casks selected for unusual maturations or characterful distillery combinations. Alistair Walker founded the firm in 2020 after his family's sale of GlenDronach, Glenglassaugh and BenRiach to Brown-Forman. This Glenrothes 12 Years Old, distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2021 from cask 6345 at 58.7%, was matured or finished in a Marsala wine cask with 265 bottles released into European markets.

Marsala wine is a fortified Sicilian wine produced through the Soleras style or through a faster Concia method, with the wine carrying notes of dried fruit, almond and a slightly oxidised caramel character distinct from sherry. When the cask transfers to whisky, the residual Marsala chemistry contributes those nutty, oxidised wine notes alongside European oak's slow lignin and hemicellulose breakdown. Twelve years in Marsala wood produces a layered profile distinct from sherry or port maturations, with the cask's Mediterranean origin showing through.

The nose lifts dried apricot and almond with a faint caramel undertone, the Marsala signature clearly distinct from sherry. Fresh fruit threads through with polished oak underneath. The palate moves through cooked pear, raisin and a developing nutty depth, with 58.7% strength delivering the cask's chemistry without overwhelming. The finish runs medium long with a clean European oak grip, the Marsala's nutty oxidative side leaving a complex tail rather than a single dominant note.
