Glenrothes 11 Years Old 2012 Cask #RF-198 (Duncan Taylor)

Rum cask maturation sits outside the standard Speyside playbook, and Duncan Taylor's Single Cask programme uses these casks selectively when the right opportunity arises. This Glenrothes was distilled in 2012, finished or fully matured in a rum cask designated RF-198, and bottled in 2023 at 54.6%, with 349 bottles released into the German market. Duncan Taylor sources from working broker stocks and operates an Aberdeen based bottling line for its independent releases.

Rum casks carry a different chemistry signature than sherry or bourbon. Long maturation of Caribbean rum in tropical warehousing produces accelerated extraction of cask sugars, residual molasses chemistry and pronounced ester development from the rum's heavier fermentation. When refilled with whisky, the cask transfers brown sugar, tropical fruit (banana, pineapple, mango skin) and a softer wood signature than American oak's vanillin dominance. Eleven years of Scotch maturation in rum wood frames the spirit with a sweet, slightly funky profile rather than the structural tannin of European oak.

The nose lifts brown sugar and dried pineapple with a banana skin note threading through, the rum residue immediately recognisable beneath the Speyside fruit. The palate carries honey, molasses and tropical sweetness, the 54.6% strength delivering the cask's chemistry without overpowering the spirit's natural ester drive. The finish is medium long and gently sweet, with the rum cask's softer wood signature leaving the spirit's character clearly framed rather than masked.
