Duncan Taylor's Octave programme transfers spirit into small octave casks of roughly fifty litres for a sharpened final maturation, with this Oloroso seasoned octave delivering a different chemistry than the bourbon octaves more common in the range. The Aberdeen based bottler uses these small casks for both finishing and full term maturation. This Glenrothes 11 Years Old, distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2021 from cask 4930737 at 55.1%, runs to 90 bottles for the German market.

An Oloroso seasoned octave at this scale concentrates the cask's chemistry sharply. The reduced volume increases surface area to spirit ratio dramatically, accelerating the extraction of vanillin, lactones and ellagitannins from the staves while concentrating the residual oxidised sherry. European oak's tannin contribution presses through faster than in a full Oloroso butt, and the cask's first fill activity drives the wood signature aggressively at the small format. Eleven years in cask gives the spirit time to integrate before the sharpened octave window closes.

The nose carries raisin and fig with polished oak grip, the small cask's concentrated sherry signature clearly forward. The palate moves through chocolate orange, dried prune and a developing leathery quality, the 55.1% strength delivering the octave's sharpened chemistry without scorching. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate as the European oak's tannic load presses through. The finish runs long and resinous, the octave's tight extractive window leaving the spirit's Speyside character framed against intensified cask depth.
