Description
This GlenAllachie comes from Duncan Taylor, the cask house from Huntly in Aberdeenshire, a 14 year old, distilled in 2008, from cask 30900803, at 54.1%, one of 628 bottles. GlenAllachie is a rich, sherried Speyside malt from Aberlour, built on full bodied spirit and active casks. It was founded in 1967, designed by the architect William Delme Evans, his fourth distillery after Jura and Tullibardine.
The spirit was run slowly off the spirit still, giving a full bodied Speyside spirit. Maturation came in an Oloroso cask, layered over the full GlenAllachie make. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin rounding out as esters lend riper orchard fruit and a chocolate depth. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. Active first fill wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt.
At 54.1%, undiluted, it is dark and full. A rich orchard sweetness and dark sugar, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. It is full and fruity, the spirit carrying the cask. Dried fruit, spice and a soft oak see it out. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real richness.
