Description
This official Glen Scotia, a 17 year old, from 2002, at 46%, 1500 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the salt and oil. Through oxidative maturity esters concentrate, the citrus turning to a salted toffee over the oily body. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
At 46% it is smooth and oily. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft citrus and a salted oil sit behind the cask. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is Glen Scotia's coastal, briny Campbeltown style.
