Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 9 year old, from 2012, cask 748, at 55.6%, 251 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character.
Distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, for a briny, oily make of salt, citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit.
At a natural 55.6% it is full and oily. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
