Description
This official Glen Scotia, an 8 year old, from 2012, cask 19-657-7, at 55.6%, 240 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a coastal, briny Campbeltown malt, founded in 1832 on the Kintyre peninsula. The Glen was added to the Scotia name around 1930, the distillery dating to 1832.
It was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. Maturation came in an Oloroso cask, layered over the briny Glen Scotia make. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the salty make. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years.
At its natural 55.6% it is concentrated. A coastal, oily sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
