Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, an 11 year old, from 2007, cask 17/106-2, at 57.9%, 292 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt known for sea salt, oil and a salted toffee. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
It was distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. It was matured in a Red Wine cask, the wood working into the oily malt. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town.
At a natural 57.9% it is full and oily. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with red berry and a dry spice from the cask. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
