Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 13 year old, from 2005, cask 17/413-8, at 55.7%, 328 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
It was run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. It was matured in an Oloroso cask, the wood working into the oily malt. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge.
At a hearty 55.7% it carries real weight. A briny, oily coastal fruit, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Soft citrus and a salted oil sit behind the cask. The finish runs long, oily and coastal. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
