Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 6 year old, from 2016, cask 3245, at 59.3%. Glen Scotia is a salty, oily Campbeltown malt from the west coast of Scotland. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
It was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla over the brine. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace.
At 59.3%, undiluted, it is deep and briny. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The finish is rounded, salted and oily. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
