Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, an 8 year old, from 2009, cask 217, at 56.1%, 210 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a maritime Campbeltown malt, one of the last three of a town that once held thirty. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town.
It was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, for a briny, oily make of salt, citrus and a salted toffee. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the coastal spirit. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years.
At a natural 56.1% it is full and oily. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft citrus and a salted oil sit behind the cask. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
