Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, a 12 year old, from 2005, cask 152, at 56.1%, 228 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a salty, oily Campbeltown malt from the west coast of Scotland. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town.
It was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla over the brine. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit.
At a natural 56.1% it is full and oily. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. A long, oily finish carries a sea salt and a citrus. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
