An official release of Glen Scotia, a 10 year old, from 2006, cask 482, at 52.1%, 234 bottles in all. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
Distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, for a briny, oily make of salt, citrus and a salted toffee. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the coastal spirit. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
Bottled at a cask strength 52.1%, it is rich. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Citrus, brine and a salted toffee fill the middle. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is Glen Scotia's coastal, briny Campbeltown style.
