Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, at 46%. Glen Scotia is a coastal, briny Campbeltown malt, founded in 1832 on the Kintyre peninsula. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast.
It was run through the stills and shell and tube condensers on Crosshill Loch water, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. Finished in a Red Wine cask, the wood building over the oily, coastal spirit. Without an age statement, vanillin sweetness and a briny oil point to good years in oak. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
Reduced to 46%, it is mellow. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with red berry and a dry spice from the cask. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. A long, oily finish carries a sea salt and a citrus. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
