Description
An official release of Glen Scotia, an 11 year old, at 54.1%, 1698 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from a town once called the whisky capital of the world. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it.
It was worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. A Pedro Ximenez cask held it, shaping the coastal spirit over the years. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the salty, oily spirit growing rounder. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body.
At cask strength 54.1% it is full bodied. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. Beneath it run citrus, salt and a soft oil. The finish runs long, oily and coastal. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
