Description
Gin Sul is a love letter to Portugal written in northern Germany, made at a small Hamburg distillery on a base of fine wheat spirit. Fresh lemons travel up from Portugal, joined by rosemary, juniper, lavender and coriander, while a quiet floral depth comes from labdanum cistus, a resinous shrub that grows along the Portuguese west coast and lends a balsamic note you rarely meet in gin.
The nose is fresh citrus over spicy juniper and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is full, an interplay of juniper, rosemary and lavender lifted by lemon freshness, before a soft, lingering finish that carries a light resin note and floral edges. It makes a lovely gin and tonic with a good tonic and lemon zest, though it truly comes alive in a Basil Smash on a warm evening.
