Description
Fettercairn from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, bottled at 50.5%, one of 170 bottles. Fettercairn, founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries. Its stills carry unique cooling rings, copper tubes that drench them in cold mountain water.
It was distilled from unpeated malt in stills cooled by their copper rings, for a light, fruit driven spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Without an age statement, vanillin sweetness and a tropical fruit point to good years in oak. Refill oak lets the light, tropical Fettercairn character lead the way. It has been owned by Whyte and Mackay since 1973. A Scottish oak project has planted thousands of native oak saplings beside the distillery. Its water comes from springs in the Grampian and Cairngorm mountains above the distillery.
At 50.5%, undiluted, it is deep and tropical. A clean, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft tropical fruit and a vanilla sit behind the cask. The finish is long, fruity and gently spiced. This is a fruity, tropical Highland single malt.
