Description
This official Fettercairn, a 22 year old, at 47%. Fettercairn is a Highland malt of pineapple and citrus, distilled at the foot of the mountains. It was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, who turned a corn mill at Nethermill into a distillery.
It was distilled from unpeated malt in stills cooled by their copper rings, the cooling rings lifting a clean, tropical character. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried mango, coffee and beeswax. A gentle maturation suits the light make, the tropical fruit growing richer with time. It uses unpeated malt and matures mostly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and fruit to the fore. It was the second distillery licensed in Scotland after the Excise Act of 1823.
At a hearty 47% it carries real weight. Pineapple, mango and a gentle honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. A clean finish ends on pineapple and a soft oak. This is a Highland single malt of real character.
