Description
An 11 year old Fettercairn from the bottler Flickenschild, distilled in 2011, from cask 800511, bottled at 62.1%, one of 222 bottles. Fettercairn is a light, tropical Highland malt distilled in the Howe of the Mearns since 1824. Its water comes from springs in the Grampian and Cairngorm mountains above the distillery.
The spirit was made on mountain water with the stills drenched in cold water, for a clean make of pineapple and citrus. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the fruit, the body softer and fuller. The water cooled stills give a light spirit that ages with grace. It was the second distillery licensed in Scotland after the Excise Act of 1823. The light, fruity make takes cask flavour well while keeping its pineapple and citrus.
At 62.1%, undiluted, it is deep and tropical. Mango, citrus and a soft honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. The finish is long, fruity and gently spiced. This is a tropical Highland malt from the foot of the mountains.
