Description
From the London house Berry Bros and Rudd, a 10 year old Fettercairn, distilled in 2006, from cask 107752, bottled at 46%. Fettercairn is a light, tropical Highland malt distilled in the Howe of the Mearns since 1824. John Gladstone's son William became Prime Minister and reformed the taxation of whisky.
The spirit was drawn off the stills, the cooling rings raising reflux for a fruity spirit, for a clean make of pineapple and citrus. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the fruity spirit. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the tropical, fruity spirit growing rounder. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. The water cooled stills give a light spirit that ages with grace. Refill oak lets the light, tropical Fettercairn character lead the way. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and fruit to the fore.
Reduced to 46%, it is mellow. A light, tropical sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is clean, the fruit carried on a light body. The finish is rounded, tropical and gently spiced. This is a Highland single malt of real character.
