Dugas bottles this 20 year Malecon under La Maison du Rhum, a Panamanian rich in caramel, dried fruit and chocolate with an apple edge, soft and sweet through a long caramel finish at 49%.
Description
Dugas releases this Malecon as a La Maison du Rhum Rhum Vieux, sourced from Panama, where Malecon style rum is a familiar name among independent bottlings of the country's soft, vanilla led spirit. Distilled from molasses and aged twenty years in ex bourbon wood, it carries caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and chocolate on the nose, the long maturation giving plenty of depth. Bottled at 49%, it has more weight than the entry level Panama norm.
The palate is caramel led with apple, dried fruit and oak, finishing on caramel, dried fruit and chocolate with a clear sweetness. This is a soft, sweet, very old Panamanian, rich and rounded with fruit and wood, the kind of dessert leaning sipper the style is loved for. Some drinkers note the sweetness runs high, so it sits best as a smooth, after dinner pour for those who want age, caramel and fruit rather than a dry, spirit forward dram.
