A Guatemalan solera ron from Bodegas de America bottled by Dugas for La Maison du Rhum, column still molasses spirit carrying woody, nutty and citrus notes that resolve into vanilla, tonka bean and marzipan at 48%.
Description
This La Maison du Rhum release is a Dugas selection of Guatemalan rum from Bodegas de America, built as a solera in the Spanish style. The 10 on the label and the solera method mean the spirit is a blend carrying a trace of older rum rather than a straight age statement, so it is read as a solera blend rather than a decade in cask.
The molasses base is column distilled and light, with the character coming from wood and blending. Aromas of oak, barrel and hazelnut lead into a palate of citrus, more wood and a bitter orange edge that keeps it from feeling flat. The finish is the highlight, turning to vanilla, tonka bean and marzipan over a woody base. Bottled at 48% it has more grip and balance than many soft Guatemalan rons, an elegant and surprisingly composed pour for an after dinner moment.
