Description
A Dufftown of a 15 year old chosen by the Alistair Walker Whisky Company, distilled in 2010, from cask 806200, bottled at 55.7%, one of 290 bottles. Dufftown, owned by Diageo, is a workhorse Speyside distillery and the home of the Singleton of Dufftown. It was founded in 1895 within a former meal mill by Peter Mackenzie and his partners.
It was mashed in the full lauter tun and fermented long for a clean, grassy make, for the nutty, spicy make Dufftown is known for. Finished in a Pedro Ximenez cask, the wood building over the malty, fruity spirit. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the nutty malt deepening over a soft spice. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the smooth Speyside spirit. A gentle maturation suits the smooth make, the nutty malt growing richer with time. Its single malt has been sold as The Singleton of Dufftown since 2006, mainly in the UK and Europe.
At a hearty 55.7% it carries real weight. Green apple, malt and a soft vanilla, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. The mouthfeel is smooth, the fruit carried on a malty body. It finishes smooth, nutty and approachable. This is the Singleton of Dufftown in single malt form.
