Description
This Deanston was bottled by the bottler Daily Dram, a 19 year old, distilled in 1999, bottled at 51%. Deanston is a Highland single malt known for its waxy texture and unchillfiltered bottlings. Its flagship is the 12 year old, bottled unchillfiltered at 46.3%.
It was made on River Teith water and condensed in shell and tube condensers, for a clean, fruity spirit with a waxy edge. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the honeyed, waxy character to the fore. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the malt deepening over its waxy weight. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. Maturing in the vaulted stone warehouse, the spirit develops slow and steady. The spirit is condensed in shell and tube condensers for a clean, fruity make. The site was the Adelphi cotton mill, built in 1785 by Sir Richard Arkwright and turned to whisky in 1965.
At a hearty 51% it carries real weight. A waxy, malty sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is fruity and waxy, the malty spirit shining through. The finish is rounded, honeyed and gently spiced. This is a Highland single malt of real character.
