Molasses, dark sugar and wood with coffee, licorice and dried fruit, this Port Mourant single still Demerara was finished in Port casks and kept soft at 40%, a gentle look at the classic profile, honest about its easy strength.
Description
This is a DDL El Dorado Single Still release showcasing the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, distilled in 2009 and finished in Port casks, carried at 40% with no age statement. Port Mourant is the heaviest of the Guyanese stills, all oily anise, liquorice and dark fruit, presented here in a softer, lower-strength format.
The rum keeps the classic Demerara markers, molasses, dark sugar and wood with coffee, licorice and dried fruit, but the gentle 40% strength reins them in compared with the cask-strength independent Port Mourants. As a DDL bottling it leans rounded and easy rather than fierce, with a lightly bitter edge that some drinkers welcome. It works best as a soft introduction to the Port Mourant profile for anyone not yet ready for full proof, taken neat.
