Description
The London merchant Berry Bros and Rudd bottled this Craigellachie, a 15 year old, distilled in 2006, from cask 901055, bottled at 63.1%, one of 262 bottles. Craigellachie is the bold, oily Speyside malt that anchors the White Horse blend. With age the meaty young spirit turns to pineapple, mango and a waxy depth.
The spirit was distilled for the heavy, meaty spirit Craigellachie is known for, building the old fashioned Craigellachie style. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the heavy spirit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes and esters lend tropical fruit while ellagitannins add a drying, savoury grip. The heavy, oily make is prized by blenders for the backbone it gives White Horse. Years in oak round the spirit, the worm tub weight turning to pineapple and wax. The distillery was founded in 1891 by a group led by Peter Mackie, the man behind the White Horse blend.
At cask strength 63.1% it is full bodied. Pineapple, malt and a savoury edge, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a savoury, oily depth give it weight. The finish runs meaty, waxy and warm. This is the worm tub malt of Craigellachie.
