Captain Morgan Black Spiced

Captain Morgan Black Spiced is a sweetened, flavoured spirit drink built on column still molasses rum, sitting well outside the world of traditional Jamaican pot still. It is a mainstream product designed for easy mixing rather than contemplative tasting.

The added sugar and spicing dominate: vanilla, toffee, coffee and black pepper lead, with a cream toffee, anise tinged finish and only a faint petrol note hinting at the base spirit. There is little of the ester driven funk that defines real Jamaican rum here, and the sweetness sits front and centre, so this is honestly a spiced mixer rather than a sipper. Its natural home is a tall glass with cola, where the sweet, spiced profile does exactly what it was made to do.
