A Caol Ila of a 13 year old chosen by the Italian bottler Samaroli, at 45%. A coastal smoke runs to lemon, olive oil and a peppery lift. Water comes from Loch nam Ban, above the distillery. The distillery looks out to the Paps of Jura. The spirit is matured largely on the mainland. This is an Islay malt of clean smoke and bright citrus.

Description
From the Italian bottler Samaroli, a 13 year old Caol Ila, distilled in 2009, from cask 2100012, bottled at 45%, one of 433 bottles. Caol Ila is the quiet giant of Islay, vast yet refined. The malt is medium peated, giving a cleaner smoke than the south shore Islays.
The spirit was run from peated malt through tall stills on Loch nam Ban water, giving the lighter Islay style its shape. An American oak hogshead added vanilla and a light toffee. Through integration the spirit and cask settle, lactone coconut and a soft vanillin balancing the easing phenols. The peat here is medium rather than heavy, so fruit and smoke share the glass. Much of the spirit leaves the island by sea to mature on the mainland. From a small Victorian works it grew into one of Scotland's biggest malt distilleries. Active wood frames the smoke without smothering the citrus beneath.
Reduced to 45%, it is mellow. A clean ashy smoke with lime and brine, with a light vanilla and a touch of coconut. A maritime salt and a lemon lift run through it. Smoke and sea salt see out a long finish. This is the elegant, lighter side of Islay.
