This Caol Ila was bottled by the bottler Dram Charaidean, an 11 year old, at 59.9%. Clean peat smoke meets lemon zest and a coastal salt. Islay’s quiet giant, vast yet refined. Its casks mature within sound of the sea. The spirit is matured largely on the mainland. It stands at Port Askaig, facing Jura across the Sound. This is a coastal Islay malt of real finesse.

The bottler Dram Charaidean bottled this Caol Ila, an 11 year old, distilled in 2010, from cask 318219, bottled at 59.9%, one of 142 bottles. Caol Ila wears its Islay smoke more lightly than its southern neighbours. A ferry crosses the Sound from Port Askaig to Jura and the mainland.

The spirit was run from peated malt through tall stills on Loch nam Ban water, building the elegant Islay smoke at its heart. A fresh bourbon barrel lent vanilla, coconut and a fuller body. Across the integration years the smoke loses its edge as esters and vanillin weave into a smoother, citrussy whole. The cool Islay air gives a slow, steady maturation by the shore. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat. Water falls to the distillery from Loch nam Ban in the hills above. Years in oak round the smoke, the peat mellowing while the brine stays.

At a full 59.9% it is bold and oily. A clean ashy smoke with lime and brine, with a touch of vanilla and toffee. The texture is oily, the smoke threaded with citrus. A long, coastal finish carries a peaty warmth. This is a refined, citrus driven Islay smoke.
