Description

A 10 year old Caol Ila, this distilled in 1989 from the bottler Kr��gers Whiskygalerie, bottled at 46%, one of 258 bottles. Caol Ila is among the most widely traded of Islay's single malts. From a small Victorian works it grew into one of Scotland's biggest malt distilleries.

This was drawn off the distillery's six tall stills from peated barley, shaping the lighter side of Islay. An ex-Bourbon barrel gave a gentle sweetness and a creamy edge. Integration sees eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) fold into the spirit, the medicinal smoke gentler now. The clean, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while holding its citrus and smoke. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat. Caol Ila's smoke leans to lemon, olive oil and brine rather than tar or iodine. Olive oil and lemon sit at the heart of the Caol Ila character.

At an easy 46% it is gentle. A fresh peat smoke over oily lemon, with a touch of vanilla and toffee. An oily smoke coats the palate, citrus and brine behind. A smoky, oily warmth lingers with lemon and salt. This is Caol Ila's lighter, maritime Islay smoke.
