Description
Bozal Reserva Cempasúchil is an Oaxacan mezcal from Bozal's limited Reserva series, made from Espadin by Marcelino Ortiz in Etla, Oaxaca. It is distilled in clay pots in the traditional manner and follows the destilado con method: during the second distillation, cempasúchil flowers, the Mexican marigold, and mandarin peel are added to lend floral and citrus aromatics. Bozal means wild or untamed and the brand celebrates the wild side of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
This pechuga style run sends the vapour through the added flowers and peel rather than meat, so the lift is floral and citrus led. The aroma opens on citrus, late season blossom and a touch of baking spice, especially allspice, while the palate brings fresh green pepper with orange peel, nutmeg and anise over a lightly smoky, spicy note. The clay pot still gives a soft, almost colloidal texture and a distinctive mouthfeel. Bottled at 47 percent.
