Description
The Great Northern in Dundalk, Co. Louth, is Ireland's biggest independent distillery, founded by John Teeling in 2015 in the old Great Northern Brewery to supply the industry with malt, pot still and grain spirit. Black Rock is a rare chance to taste its single malt under its own name, this Batch 11 a 6 Years Old bottled at cask strength for an event in 2024, 117 bottles at 57.9%.
Bourbon casks did the maturing, and on young, cleanly made spirit they read loud and clear, fresh oak, green apple, vanilla and white pepper around a cereal sweet core. At full strength it is lively and direct, softening with water into honey and banana. Most Great Northern spirit disappears into other labels, which makes a distillery bottling like this a useful benchmark for modern Irish malt.
