The Beara Distillery of Castletownbere, West Cork bottled this single malt from Great Northern Distillery stock at 43% in 2022 for the German market. It is a no age statement release in the modern sourced idiom, the coastal Cork house lending its name to spirit distilled in Dundalk, Co. Louth.
Virgin oak casks shaped the whole maturation, pushing fresh sawn oak, vanilla and sweet spice to the front, with green apple, barley sugar and a peppery cereal edge from the young malt underneath. New oak on Irish malt is a fast, emphatic style, and at 43% this stays balanced, the sweetness of the wood folding into the fruit rather than flattening it.
