Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 1997 as part of the Individual Cask Bottling range from cask 2508 of 1965 vintage stock, drawn at natural strength of 48.9% for the European market. The Individual Cask Bottling programme was the distillery's first single cask range, presenting long matured Dalmuir stock cask by cask at natural strength.
Distilled in 1965 during the Sanderson era prior to Eadie Cairns ownership, the wash was made from 100% unpeated malted barley with soft Loch Cochno water and fermented around 62 hours in Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks. Auchentoshan triple distils every drop through three copper pot stills, with the intermediate and spirit stages collecting at around 81% ABV. The extra copper contact and higher cut strip sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, and other light esters, giving a delicate spirit filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak cask.
Thirty one years in cool Lowland dunnage warehousing drove slow, patient extraction. Lignin breakdown released vanillin while cis and trans oak lactones built coconut and sweet wood, and char layer contact produced furfural alongside Maillard caramelised sugars. Holding 48.9% across three decades indicates a tight cask and minimal evaporative loss, with tertiary stage ester transformation layering polished fruit over the lighter triple distilled spirit base.
