Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 2007 as a 30 year old decanter from 1976 vintage stock, with 600 bottles released to the European market at natural strength of 41.8%. The decanter format groups long matured Lowland stock laid down during the Eadie Cairns ownership era at Dalmuir.
Distilled in 1976 from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water from the Kilpatrick Hills, the wash was fermented around 62 hours across Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before passing through Auchentoshan's three copper pot stills. The wash, intermediate, and spirit stills lift the final cut to around 81% ABV, stripping sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, and other light esters. The clean spirit was filled into ex Bourbon American oak for on site dunnage maturation.
Three decades in cool Lowland conditions drove patient extraction from the American oak. Vanillin from lignin breakdown gave vanilla, cis and trans oak lactones added coconut and sweet wood, and char layer contact built furfural with Maillard derived caramelised sugars. Natural strength of 41.8% reflects steady evaporative loss over thirty years, with tertiary stage ester transformation lending an integrated, refined profile to the lighter triple distilled spirit base.
