Ardbeg 32 Years Old 1974 Cask #3328

Cask #3328, an Italian market 1974 single cask sitting alongside its sister barrel #3327 (released separately, also Italy) and the LMDW release from cask #3309 in the same 1974 batch. Consecutive cask numbers indicate consecutive fills in the warehouse run, so the spirit shares distillation date, wash regime and likely the same yeast bill. The same vintage character then expressed differently across three barrels reflects the natural variation in wood condition, char depth and warehouse position over thirty two years.

Matured on Islay in a single refill American oak hogshead through the 1981 mothball, the brief late 1980s reopening, the 1996 final Allied Distillers closure and the 1997 Glenmorangie buy. Bottled in 2006 at natural strength 53.5% ABV, no chill filtration, no added colour. The retained ABV is unusually high for a 32 year Islay cask and points to a cooler warehouse position with slow ethanol attrition.

The higher alcohol after long maturation concentrates extractive compounds in solution: oak lactones (coconut, polished wood), hemicellulose furans (almond, toasted caramel), and lignin vanillin (sweet baking spice) read more intensely than at lower strengths. The 1974 peat, originally guaiacol heavy from kilning, has equilibrated to a leather and ash profile through three decades of slow oxidation. Purifier driven esters dominate the fruit register with concentrated pineapple, ripe lemon and tropical melon characteristic of the highest scoring 1974 Ardbegs.
