Cask #1146 was filled in March 1973 and bottled in October 2004, yielding 219 bottles for the Italian market under the Manager's Choice label. Manager's Choice was a Glenmorangie programme through which the distillery manager hand selected single casks for release to specific export markets, often through long standing partners like Italian importer Velier. The 1973 vintage falls in the late Hiram Walker years before the 1977 ownership shift, and surviving casks at this age and strength are unusually well preserved.
Thirty one years in a single ex Bourbon cask on Islay, bottled at 49.5% ABV, non chill filtered and natural colour. The 49.5% reading after three decades and one year is exceptional for the maritime climate, where humidity favours ethanol loss and most casks drop below 50% by year twenty five. The slow trajectory suggests a particularly tight cask seal and a cooler than average warehouse position.
American oak across this duration delivers heavy oak lactone expression (cis isomer dominant, coconut and creamy vanilla) alongside lignin derived vanillin and syringaldehyde. The original peat phenols from 1973 kilning, initially centred on guaiacol and 4 ethylphenol, have undergone slow oxidative shift toward tarry and leathery notes. Long warehousing on Islay contributes bromophenols from sea atmosphere via slow gas exchange through cask staves, the source of the iodine and salted citrus character common to old Ardbeg.
