Description
One of 246 bottles drawn from cask #2782, an Italian market release through Velier during the early Glenmorangie revival of Ardbeg. The 1972 distillate belongs to the Hiram Walker era when the distillery was producing for blends, and casks from this vintage survived the 1981 mothballing in dunnage warehouses at the southern edge of Islay. After Glenmorangie's 1997 acquisition, the company began systematically bottling these archive casks single rather than blending them away.
Filled into a single refill American oak hogshead and matured on Islay for thirty years before bottling in May 2003 at natural cask strength of 49.9% ABV. The drop from filling strength reflects slow oxidative loss across three decades in cool, maritime warehouses where annual evaporation runs around 2%. Bottled without chill filtration and without added colour, preserving fatty acid esters and phenolic compounds intact.
Three decades in refill American oak shifts the balance from primary peat phenols toward integrated maturation chemistry. Initial guaiacol and 4 methylguaiacol from the 1972 kilning oxidise and esterify, mellowing the smoke into tarred rope and smouldering driftwood rather than fresh bonfire. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, vanilla) reach saturation, while the Ardbeg purifier's signature ester pool of ethyl octanoate and isoamyl acetate persists as preserved pineapple and candied lemon beneath the medicinal core.
