Description
Cask #578, sister Ardbeg to cask #1140 from the 1967 vintage, both bottled by Signatory Vintage in 1997 at thirty years. The two casks share distillation lineage from Hiram Walker's full production years before the 1981 mothballing, and their parallel release through Signatory's Cask Strength Collection allows side by side comparison of cask variation across three decades of identical warehouse exposure.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1967 and matured on Islay for thirty years across the 1981 mothball, the late 1980s reopening, the 1996 Allied Distillers final closure and the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition. Bottled at 52% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The retained alcohol after thirty years is higher than sister cask #1140 (49.8%), pointing to a cooler warehouse position with reduced ethanol attrition.
Higher retained ABV at thirty years intensifies extraction compound expression: oak lactones (cis dominant, coconut and oiled wood), hemicellulose breakdown furans (caramel, toasted almond), and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde (vanilla, spice) all read sharper than at diluted strengths. The 1967 peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative shift across three decades into leather, tarred rope and seasoned ash. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists as concentrated tropical fruit, the distillery's spirit still fingerprint from this golden vintage.
