Description
Cask #2740, an early 2000s Belgian market release from Ardbeg's 1974 vintage. Belgium punches above its weight as a specialist whisky market, and the country received a steady supply of individual cask releases through the Glenmorangie programme. This bottle predates the larger 1974 cask releases of 2006 by three years and comes from a lower cask number, suggesting an earlier fill date within the same distillation campaign.
Filled into refill American oak during Hiram Walker's tenure, matured on Islay for twenty nine years across both mothball periods and the 1997 ownership transition, bottled in 2003 at 52.3% ABV. No chill filtration, no added colour. The 52.3% reading after almost three decades sits comfortably for a 1974 ex Bourbon cask, reflecting the typical attrition curve in a maritime warehouse where humidity drives ethanol off ahead of water.
Twenty nine years of maturation delivers near full oak interaction. American oak hemicellulose breaks down to furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) adding caramel and toasted almond, while cis and trans oak lactones reach expressive levels giving coconut and waxed wood. The 1974 peat phenols, centred on guaiacol and 4 methylguaiacol, have undergone substantial oxidative shift to leather, tarred rope and ash. The purifier driven ester pool (ethyl octanoate, isoamyl acetate) holds tropical fruit (pineapple, lemon, mango) characteristic of long matured Ardbeg from this golden vintage.
