Ardbeg 23 Years Old 1974 Cask #1045 (Signatory Vintage)

A German market Ardbeg from Signatory Vintage's Cask Strength Collection, drawn from 1974 cask #1045 and bottled in 1997, the same year Glenmorangie launched its Provenance series using its own 1974 stock to relaunch the brand. The parallel release of independent and distillery 1974 single casks marks 1997 as a pivotal year for the vintage.

Filled into refill American oak cask in 1974 during Hiram Walker's full production years and matured on Islay for twenty three years across the 1981 mothball, the late 1980s reopening, and the 1996 Allied Distillers final closure. Bottled in 1997 at 50.9% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The retained alcohol after more than two decades sits in the expected range for the maritime warehouse cycle.

Twenty three years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1974 peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) hold strong intensity with moderate oxidative conversion, delivering classic Ardbeg phenolic smoke alongside emerging leather and tarred rope notes. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
