Ardbeg 17 Years Old 2005

The senior member of Ardbeg's heavily released 2005 vintage Distillery Single Cask programme, bottled at 17 years and surpassing the 13, 15 and 16 year siblings from the same cohort. The 2005 distillation year has supplied a deep run of single cask bottlings under modern Glenmorangie ownership, with this 17 year expression among the oldest. The Feis Ile 2021 release from cask #5460, also 2005 distillate, was originally earmarked for the Supernova range before its complexity merited standalone release.

Matured on Islay for seventeen years from 2005 under LVMH owned Glenmorangie. Bottled in 2023 at 53% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 53% reading after seventeen years is moderate for an Ardbeg ex Bourbon cask, suggesting a more humid warehouse position where ethanol attrition runs faster against water loss, characteristic of the dunnage stacks at lower racking heights.

Seventeen years of American oak maturation delivers near full expression of the modern Ardbeg signature. Cis and trans oak lactones reach saturation for coconut and oiled wood, hemicellulose furans build caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer sweet baking spice. The 50 to 55 ppm phenol load delivers guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol and p cresol smoke at strong intensity. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists across long maturation as concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
