Ardbeg 16 Years Old 2005

A 2005 single cask drawn from one of Ardbeg's most heavily released vintages of the modern era. The 2005 distillation cohort has supplied a wide range of bottlings: standard Distillery Single Cask releases at 13, 15, 16 and 17 years; the Swedish market exclusive at 15 years; and the celebrated Feis Ile 2021 release from cask #5460, originally earmarked for the Supernova heavily peated range before being released as a single cask in its own right. The vintage corresponds to Ardbeg's eighth year under Glenmorangie ownership.

Matured on Islay for sixteen years from 2005 under LVMH owned Glenmorangie. Bottled in 2021 at 56.8% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The natural strength at this age indicates a tightly sealed cask and likely a cooler dunnage warehouse position with reduced ethanol attrition through the long maturation cycle.

Sixteen years of American oak interaction builds the modern Ardbeg signature into integrated mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones build coconut and oiled wood at strong concentration, while hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) add caramel and toasted almond. Lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde deliver sweet baking spice. Modern peat phenols carry through at full intensity (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) for classic phenolic smoke, with the Ardbeg purifier ester signature reading as concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
