Ardbeg 11 Years Old 2011 Cask #2447 (Feis Ile 2023, 1st Fill Amontillado)

Released only at the Ardbeg distillery during Feis Ile 2023, the annual Islay whisky and music festival held during the last week of May. Each Islay distillery contributes an exclusive bottling available only on its open day, drawing collectors to the island for the single chance to acquire each year's release. Cask #2447 was filled on 31 August 2011 and drawn for the 2023 festival with documented fill and bottling dates on the label.

Filled into a first fill amontillado sherry butt in 2011 and matured on Islay for eleven years before bottling on 24 January 2023 at 58.2% ABV. Non chill filtered with no added colour, 637 bottles drawn at natural strength. Amontillado sherry is the secondary style produced when fino loses its flor yeast cap and continues ageing oxidatively.

First fill amontillado butts deliver a chemistry that blends fino's salty almond profile with oloroso's oxidative depth. The residual sherry impregnated in the staves contributes polyphenols (gallic acid, ellagic acid) from Spanish oak, melanoidins from Maillard browning, and acetaldehyde and sotolon from the secondary oxidative phase. Layered onto modern Ardbeg's 50 to 55 ppm phenol load (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol), the amontillado chemistry shifts the smoke register toward almond skin, polished leather, dried orange and bitter walnut, with the Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivering citrus and stone fruit beneath the sherry layer.
