Ardbeg 11 Years Old 1998 Cask #1275 (First Fill Bourbon)

1998 was the first full calendar year of Glenmorangie owned production at Ardbeg, the company having acquired the silent distillery from Allied Distillers in June 1997 and recommissioned the stillhouse with new equipment alongside a refreshed peating specification at the modern 50 to 55 ppm phenol level. Cask #1275 is one of the earliest fills of the modern era, drawn as a single cask Distillery release after eleven years on Islay.

Filled into a first fill American oak bourbon barrel in 1998 and matured on Islay for eleven years before bottling in 2009 at 55.4% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. First fill bourbon barrels at the 200 litre size have high liquid to wood ratio and intense extraction, ideal for shorter matured releases where rapid oak interaction shapes the spirit character.

First fill American oak delivers a heavy lactone signature (cis and trans isomers of beta methyl gamma octalactone) for coconut and oiled vanilla, alongside lignin derived vanillin and syringaldehyde for sweet baking spice. The 1998 Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, 4 methylguaiacol, syringol, p cresol) remain at strong intensity after eleven years of slow Islay maturation, delivering classic Ardbeg phenolic smoke (kiln char, tarred rope, medicinal iodine). The Ardbeg purifier ester signature reads clearly at this age with pineapple, lemon zest and tropical fruit, the marker of the distillery's spirit still architecture redirecting heavy congeners through reflux.
